BITING AND THEN SOME!

BITING AND THEN SOME!
  • Hello Everyone,

I really need some guidance here.  I have a coming 2 yr old QH filly being fed Omelene 200 and timothy mix that I have owned since she has been a weanling.  Recently (a month or so) ago she has began to bite n bite hard, ears pinned and the whole bit.  I have tried being the big bad wolf with the loud voice and making her move away from me.  She acts this way with everyone.  Well, that worked for a while now if she decides she wants to bite you and you so much as raise your voice she will rear slightly and strike with her front hooves.  She isn't coming off the ground enough to actually get you but it's the point that this is extremely dangerous and I believe she has made this into a game.  I am a seasoned horse person (but not to this extreme) and have tried every trick in the book.  I need some help desperately before someone gets hurt.  Just so everyone knows I will not strike this filly in the face to alleviate the biting problem.  I'm looking for some advice thats creative.  This filly is quite smart and calculative.  I fully intend to work through this with her.  Thanks in advance for everyones suggestions.....Gotta sign off to feed....
  • I would put her in a round pen, and let her come up to you when she is being nice, but at the first sign of aggression, send her out and make her move and keep moving until she will come up nicely again.  Just let her know that she will be made to work when she is bad.  Use your body and a stock whip as an extention of your arm.
If you have to hit a horse to correct the bitting,  come up under their chin, that way they don't see it coming and get head shy.  I use an open safety pin concealed in my hand and when a horse tries to bite my hand, it runs it's nose into the pin.  They soon learn that "Mom bites back!"
