My legs!

My legs!
  • When working on turning  a horse using leg cues.  When turning left, do I hold the leg on the girth and tap with right leg?  Or do I tap with inside leg- left one- to push the hind quarters out.  Then if no turn results give pressure with right leg?  I want to make sure I am doing it right.   He is very stiff and we are working on turns and being supple. What is the general rule of thumb?  Thank you for any and all suggestions.  I appreciate all opinions.
  • Well if you are trying to soften him up and get him to come around your leg then it would be right rein, right leg just behind the girth or at.  Don't use a steady pressure as they can lean on it real easy, just bump or roll your spur up.  Remember to lead with your hand at first so that you are guiding him around the circle.

When you want him to cross over on the front and stay fairly straight in the turn then it will be right rein directing, left rein against his neck and left leg bumping in front of the girth up around the shoulders to push them over and across.  You will feel him cross his front feet when he does it right.

If you want to work on straightness by doing 90 degree turns then its right rein directing, left rein loose, bump in the flank to push the hind over and square up the corner.

    Hope that helped.

In the pics you can see that I am leading shadow with my right hand out pretty far.  You will want to show him first then you can bring your hand in closer to his neck just don't go so far out to unbalance yourself or him.

In the second pic he stepped out of the circle and I am using the outside leg or my left leg to push him back into the circle.

    Have fun and stay safe.
