Introduce new horse to the herd

Introduce new horse to the herd
  • How would you introduce a new horse to the old herd without injury? Or at least a way that would prevent less injury to the new horse.

I have one horse who is extremely dominant & can possibly cause injury to a new horse. I have no choice but to put them all together, so does anyone have advice on this issue?
  • I always err on the side of caution when introducing new horses. If you can't keep them separated with fence or pens for a short time, I have brought the new horse in on a long training lead. Hang out with them for a while. You may want to put the dominant horse on the lead instead of the new one.
Good luck and good to see you.
  • We also have acclimated new horses by keeping them seperated along side the pasture for about 2 weeks....then let them loose.  All rear shoes are pulled on all horses in the pasture.

Our barn manager has also had some horses walk through the pasture at feeding time being led on a lead rope.....  You can allow the new horse to walk through the horses in the pasture during feeding time, and start to feel out the tension surely to come.

Usually release the new horses in the morning after feeding time......I have seen dozens of horses released into the pasture (5 acres - 25 horses) and I have seen some get beat up, but never seriously injured.

    Good luck,
