not taking the bit

not taking the bit
  • I have a 4 year old quarter horse  which I have broke and am training myself. I have raised and trained several babies, but I have never had this problem with any of them.. I started this baby as a 3 year old with all the basics including rides and snaffel bit.  I let her be a horse that winter, leaving her to mature a little with no problems. This spring  I went to put the bit in her mouth like  always, slow and easy, and she refused. Would not  open her mouth.  I see she is getting her wolf teeth but the bit sets behind them and  she seems to be fine when I finally do get it in her mouth after a fight. What has happened? I am always careful putting it in and taking it out of her mouth so it doesn't hit her teeth. I would rather not fight her every time I bit her up.. I have tried molasses, any other ideas?
    Thanks for your help
  • Have your tried sticking a finger in her mouth, behind the front teeth poking her a little in the gums, that will usually make a horse open up enough and  the bit will slide right in. You do not poke hard, just kind move like you are tickling.
  • Yes, I have  tried that, she says no  to that too. thanks
