A little more info would be helpful. Why are you lunging him? I don't intend to sound rude or anything, there's lots of reasons why people lunge horses. Are you lunging him to calm him down before a ride? Are you lunging him because you can't ride but want to keep him in shape? Are you lunging him for a lesson? Or some other reason?
What level of training is he at? Are you asking him for walk/trot/canter or just walk/trot?
If your lunging to help him calm down and focus before a ride then I would say it depends... When he's focusing on you consistantly and is being responsive and has all his "wiggles" out then you can stop.
