Question about conditions in Texas:

Question about conditions in Texas:
  • I know there are some members that live in Texas and I was wondering if you could answer some questions for me? I have been hearing that first cutting hay is being sold for over $12 a bale? Any truth to that? Also, they say that the farmers (ranchers) are selling off all their cattle and that by this time next year, there will be no cattle or any animals for that matter, in the state. I have heard that the drought is that bad in Texas. I hope this is all just a bad rumor. [>:]
  • Dolphin,
Not rumors. Hay has been critical and it it is $20.00? a bale.
$150 or more for rounds and likely not horse quality. No pasture and no rain.
Everyone has been getting hay shipped in. I got it from Colorado. Lots of underhanded selling of bad hay or stolen shipments. A truckload of hay can cost $10 to $15,000 Colic and many sick horses.

Most ranchers have sold all their stock and selling out property. One of my vets is concerned he will have no practice since there is very little stock left to take care of. Feed prices keep going up. Lots of horses for sale and free.

Predictions are for another bad year.

    We need rain.
  • Thank you DaneHaven for your honest answer. I didn't realize it was so terrible. How absolutely horrible for all of you in Texas. I pray God will send you all rain. This world is so upside down that not even the weather is the way it is suppose to be. Very sorry to hear my questions were not bad rumors [':(']
  • Someone at work said there are TX cattle farmers leasing pasture in Nebraska and moving entire herds northward.  I guess the price of beef will reflect.
I've seen nasty looking round bales piled on trucks and I always think: going to TX.  I feel so bad for TX.
  • I read a news report online where they were talking to a big Texas rancher. He evidently has property in one of the Dakotas, Nebraska, a couple more states and either property or leased in Canada. He says that he will be OK but he feels for the 'little guys' that don't have that option. I think in the U.S. we sometimes get complacent and forget that we can't control everything...
  • What bugs the stew out of me is the fact we can pipe oil from Alaska to Mexico, and we can create an interstate roadway system but we can't set up an national pipeline grid for RUN OFF water that is flooding and ruining one area to send to places in drought conditions.  Makes no sense to me.
  • Yeah, it's always the "little guys" that suffer the most. I can't believe that people are so awful that they are ripping the people of Texas off with hay prices and poor quality hay. No good can come from that. Good point Hunter, seems they should be able to do something for the Texans and their stock.
  • Not only is Texas getting ripped on hay prices, the states that are helping to rip them off are ripping of their own state buyers also.  I cant believe the price of hay here in MO due to so much being shipped out.  Seems to of lowered a tad bit, but when the hay was in HUGE supply, before people started selling everything, they were selling bales to their own customers for tripple the price.  I went to Senior feed due to that so I could stretch my hay out.  Its bad everywhere.

I sure hope that Tex gets some relief this yr.
