Will a fox kill a small dog?

Will a fox kill a small dog?
  • My girl is 9 pounds when she's watching her figure.  There's a somewhat bold fox in the pasture.  Teddy Bear Dog might run him off, though.  I've been told they won't make friends.  I just don't want trouble.  I'm going to keep a close eye on her!
  • I'd keep her close.  I worry about my min pin when she's off in the woods out of eyesight.  BF has some pretty BIG beefy cats that seem to keep the predators away but you never know who might have just wandered on by...

  • Yes they will.  Small dogs, cats, birds and rabbits are all at rist with foxes.  Keep her close.  Or make sure the big dogs are out when she is.  All the same, don't let her out  of sight in the woods and such.

Nine pounds... What breed is she?

As to the fox, the best solution is a .22 bullet.  Unless that would get you in trouble with the authorities, shooting a gun in a Suburban area, etc...
  • Oh heck Stude, this ain't the burbs!  You an shoot anything out in this red-neck land!  (I actually live in North Mississippi, but I work in Memphis and everyone knows where that is)  I hope the dogs run him off.  (the big dogs)

She's min-pin/jack russell.  Little Miss Hyper.  I just picked up the other min-pin who is WAY out of breed standards in size.  (Thank you Mr. Unethical breeder!)  Another rescue who needs to find a forever home, though I sure love the little guy.

Thanks for the heads up.  Didn't see the fox today.  I still don't trust my little girl out there.  A hungry hawk could take her out!
  • From some of your earlier posts I would guess the house has been vacant either continuously or occasionally for quite a while?  It's highly likely, now that the dogs are back, Mr. Fox will relocate elsewhere.  As to the hawk danger, maybe, but I doubt it.

Mississippi...  hmmm... I talked to some people who had a Studebaker Park Phaeton (188'8)' for sale in ol' Miss.  Nice vehicle that needed more work than I have the money for.  Nice vehicle though... wish I could have pulled it off.
  • Vacant for several months.  I hope he's gone.

I have a neighbor who always comes up with old cars.  he has a 30-something Caddy and a 70-something vette.  He just sold an Opal and has a lead on two basket Vettes that I'd LOVE to check out!!
  • We definitely keep the 6 lb. dog away from the coyotes, not sure about our resident hawks.....?  He's usually in the company of the big dogs but I don't know......

I bet the fox will vacate now that you and the dogs are home.  We had lots of coyotes allover our place prior to our move-in and they have moved on or at least hide themselves well.
  • Yeah, I really like the early thirties luxury cars.  My grandmother had an early thirties Pierce Arrow.  Mother wanted it when her own mother died, but Dad insisted she take the (nearly new then) Studebaker Stationwagon.  That wagon sat in the barn for four years before I was allowed to use it for a year.  It was like being given a new car to drive to school.  I currently drive a '56 Studebaker Parkview and love old Bess a lot.

Yeah, I'm sure the fox will move on with the big dogs around.  Just make sure they are out and about a lot.  Mr. Fox will likely make tracks.

Dana, don't be too very sure that the Dog-Man has moved on.  He likes to live near men and will just hide better, rather than give up an easy food source.
  • Saw the fox yesterday.  WOW he's pretty!  It looked like he was passing through the pasture and suddenly realized those giant animals were now occupying it.  He took off like a bat!  Guess he's not a horse-fox. [&:]
