Traveller Communities in the US

Traveller Communities in the US
  • There are a lot of Traveller Communities, or Gypsies, in the UK, with old traditions and family values, and I was just wondering what the traveller communities are like in the US, whether they are as isolated and prejudiced as the ones in the UK?
  • I have limited experience with Roma's (Roma, not Romanian), or Gypsies as you would call them. There are other names, gypsy being the least favored from what I have been told, I just do not remember them right now. As far as I know, it's a very broad spectrum. In the United States they are not heavily rallied against. The general hatred in the US is currently aimed at muslims and the middle east. I am sure at one point there was prejudice against Roma's, just like there was prejudice against the Germans, Japanese, Italians, Irish, black slaves, etc. Is it still here though? Very doubtful. If anything the rarity would make them exotic here.

Currently, I do not know of any 'traveler' communities in the US (edit: I don't know of any beyond traveling Circus'). Although I could probably ask a friend who is a 'traveler' and see what he knows.
  • There's a fairly large traveller community near the airport in Memphis. (trailer park on Shelby between Tchulahoma and Swinnea)  My oldest went to school with some kids from there at one point (early elementary).  They're fairly mistrusted but there's a reason for that.

I'm sure there were&nbsp';p'lenty in the carnie crowds I worked in oh-so-many years ago.

I love the movie "Snatch".  It's one of my all time favorites and the ONLY reason I came to appreciate Brad Pitt.
  • In Conn. travelers generally pass thru living at places like a motel that offer weekly and monthly rates, or with other people who rent or own homes, there is actually several communitys of gypsies or roma's that travel internationally taking jobs such as cooks, cleaners, dishwashers, construction workers, basically jobs that offer cash payment. I know a few brazilians who work here in US, and when it suits them they will travel to austrailia and other places. they enjoy their no strings lifestyle. Sorry don't know any wiskey drinking, camp fire types that place spells on ya lol

  • It seems American travellers are fairly different to the UK ones.

Haha the majority of travellers in the UK actually ARE like the ones from Snatch, but if you stay on the right side of them they are lovely. A program you guys may find interesting is My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding, a small insight into the modern day life of travellers and gypsies. You can access it via youtube i think =]
  • I do not believe the travelers here in Memphis are remotely Roma/Romani. I know there are European "gypsies" in America, but I do not know if they keep up a roaming life style any more.
  • My Grandma used to tell me stories of when she was a little girl growing up in northwestern Pennsylvania.  Her parents used to tell her that if she wasn't good the gypsies would come and take her away.  She used to see what her folks called gypsies traveling in wagons with horses tied on behind.  This was in the late 1890's early 1900's.

Just wanted to add that I just did a little research on gypsies in Pennsylvania.  They used to be called Black Dutch-gypsies from Germany who were assimilated into the Romnichel who were gypsies from England, mostly horsetraders.  From 1845 to 1870 about 3000 gypsies were known to be traveling on the roads in Pennsylvania.  So it is quite possible that my Grandma's gypsy stories really were real.

All I know is the community in that trailer park is commonly called Gypsies and Travellers.   So I'd say they fall under the thread topic.
