Dog de-skunk and porcupine quills
  • After Captain's porcupine episode this morning I thought I should post some important dog advice.

De-skunk recipe- Keep this recipe with the ingredients for when the situation arises.
                                *Do not store mixture*

    1 quart hydrogen peroxide
    1/4 cup baking soda
    1 tsp liquid dish soap
    2 quarts warm water
Bathe but keep out of eyes

    Porcupine quills
We are nowhere near a Vet
    *Act fast* Get assistance.
Needle nose pliers washed in alcohol and rubber gloves if you have time.
We didn't have time for either.

    Blind fold the dog.

Pull the quills as quickly and as straight out as you can. The longer they are in the worse it becomes.
A wooden dowel will help keep the dog from biting down. They will be in the roof of mouth under tongue every where. Some will penetrate straight through.
You can cut the quills tops to release the hot air building up inside them.
Use antibiotic ointment (don't get it in the nose or eyes) if you can't get to the vet right away but antibiotics will probably be needed. Quills work in never out.

  • I want to cry! Oh my heavens!
  • I hope everything turns out alright for her and for you Dane
  • I hope she becomes better soon! Please take care of here even more. i'm sure she's a sweet dog and she'll be sweeter if you help her recover.
