Bully is going blind....maybe...update
  • Yup.  We noticed his eyes were weepy but I didn't take him right in.  Well, I should have.  The vet thinks it sounds like UV-itis but she wants to see him.  I hope the inflamation will go down and he will get SOME sight back.  He's been retired because of some neuro issues.  The vet thinks it's unrelated to that.  Anyway, I'll let you guys know what's going on tomorrow. • aws im sorry hunter i hope he's gonna be ok!!! *hug*
  • Oh man...... I hope he gets some sight back.  Will be thinking of you.
  • Oh Hunt. I'm sorry! You've been having some problems with him. I hope everything turns out ok, HUG.
  • Thanks guys.  Getting him to the vet this morning took patience and time but we made it.  He didn't want to be led, then when we got to the gate, I had put some filler at the gate where it was a low spot and that threw him off so he took 3 tries to get through the gate.  Loading was slow and he really didn't want to.  Who knows where he imagines he will be going with his history.  But again, patience...  We got there, unloaded and made it into the shadowy examination area.  UVeites or UV-itis.... whatever... is what the vet thinks.   It can be caused by a number of things.... Anyway, he's got triple antibiotic ointment for his eyes 3X/day, banamine for the next 3 days and he has to be on aspirin forever.  She gave him a banamine shot and showed me how she wanted me to do his eye stuff and, by the time I got home this evening he was STANDING BY THE FENCE!  That's amazing because he hasn't been up to the fence for DAYS!  So I can tell the stuff is already helping and the vet proved he has some sight in one eye.  The other wasn't being used at all and she said it hurt him.  So now he has the worse one open some and he's seeing enough to walk up to the fence.  She warned me it's not curable and it could cause total vision loss.  I asked her if that was worse case scenario - blindness and she said yes.  Okay, I'm sort of used to the idea after a couple of days of thinking he was totally blind.  I have to be sure the others are nice to him and I think he will be okay.  So I'm glad he has a measure of sight still and we will have to see how it goes.
  • Glad to hear Bully's treatment appears to be helping already ':)'  Amazing!  What a good boy to trust you and go where he couldn't really see.  Hope tomorrow is even better.  What causes uveitis?
  • You'll have to look it up to get any kind of answer that will satisfy you but from what I know, there are a few things that COULD cause it.  Organisms that cause inflammation in the eye (ouch) or the immune system attacking itself. (via the eye)  My friend quoted a 1995 book and it said pretty much the same thing the vet said yesterday.
  • mom2rum gave me the link to a sight that's very supportive to people with blind horses.
Bully is adjusting.  The herd seems to be leaving him alone better now.  Danica is being his pasture buddy. [':)']
  • Glad to hear the herd is adjusting to him.  Danica's probably grateful to have someone who doesn't pick on her ':)'
  • Poor Bully.  Glad he is already showing improvement.
