cooling down?
  • My horse had his first ride today! He was exercised for about 5-10 minutes enough to get him sweaty :)!! ANyway..I walked him for about 10 minutes and around the barn for a few times. But to me he still felt warm..I asked the guy that rode him for me and he said he was ok. I am paranoid with that ever since my horse coliced. So i waited awhile to feed him. I cleaned his stall and didnt get him food for like an hour after that. He should be ok tonight? He ate fine and seemed great when I left. Whats the best way to tell when a horse is cooled down to eat etc...

  • She'll be fine. My rule of thumb is and hour after they eat you can ride and you can feed an hour or hour 1/2 after. I haven't had one colic yet. I almost always rinse them down if they get sweaty.
  • Check the saddle area and under the chest.  The horse, of course, being alive, will be warm...[':D']  BUT you shouldn't feel that heat being generated by sweating....or something like that.  Still, it's VERY smart to cool a horse out completely!!  Check the chest, even around the "between the legs" area in back.  If you can hose, that's good if you start on the legs and gradually adjust them to the cold water if they are really hot.  But it's not really necessary, but it gets them clean and helps them enjoy rolling all the more. [&:]  Why not let him graze in the shade a little while you hold the lead line.  Catch a breeze, cool off.... make him love you even more. [':)']
ETA:  walking is really best if he's real hot, imo
  • Im like you i am paranoid  as well every time i ride my horses they always get rinsed off (well not in winter) i will prob rinse my horse off for 10mins i some times give her a bath dependingonhow bad she realy is )sweaty or muddy from a ride ) but i rinse her off then walk her about 5mins then let her graze.....And the way i always tell and this has never let me down...when you think its time to put your horse up i always run my hand down there legs and feel there pastern and if its cool there good if there is some heat coming out of it you need to cool them off more that how i check and it has never failed me yet Thank God    hope that helps
  • Thanks. I walked him for about ten minutes like I said. I think maybe his muscles were a little sore..because he stayed slightly warmer in the chest area the rest of the night...it musta been the excitement of it all. But next time I will check him before he goes out and then right after hes done to make sure hes cooled down! THank you..that does help!
