One time there was a pregnant horse who looked to me like she had broken her leg. I didn't know the horse but it made me cry to see her - it was that bad. The owners wanted the foal and didn't want to put her down. Still, she was in a pasture with no one watching her. No one to love her, worry about her or call the vet for her. I found out later she had the foal with no problem and they never did put her down. She seemed to get better! So even what seems like an extreme problem might just work itself out over time.
Maybe she got kicked. You're right, just like us limping on one leg, it can cause extra strain on the other (s). But really I think it would take a pretty long time for that to happen. Sounds like she's not doing much moving around. She's taking care of it the way mother nature wired her to do. Smart girl!
Sorry she's hurt. I've got one with a bad front leg from a harness racing career. It's affected his whole body but he's been retired for about 9 years. That's a long time for a 17.2hh horse to limp around. [>:]
