Non-sweating 2 year old mare. (AQHA)
  • I have a 2 year old mare that can't sweat-I live in Northern Minnesota-she has not hair.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Vet wants to put her down but I'm going to try-she lives in a snow suit and boots so she is warm and is in during cold/storms.  I'm just wondering if there are suppliments that can help her as the warm weather really bothers her much more than the cold-I am buying one of those water/fans for her.  Please help. Thanks  Beth
  • Wow, I'd never heard of that before.  Is it a genetic or chromosomal disorder?

You could string misters in her shade area?
  • I feel bad for you, having to deal with this.  I respect your decision to try dealing with the problem.  I'm sure you've looked up everything under the sun but I see it's called Anhydrosis.  I found some encouraging things to read about it.  I don't have a lot of time but I googled "equine anhydrosis" and came up with a bunch.  Here's something that looks encouraging:
As for your specific question, horses that do not sweat can still be ridden. Just be careful not to overdo it. If you are too hot and miserable to enjoy the ride, he will probably be as well.

It is extremely critical that you take care in the cooling out process and monitor your horse#%92s vital signs. Lots of shade and ventilation are necessary when cooling anhydrotic horses out. Hosing under the belly, chest and between the legs is also crucial.
