Teeth
  • My 2yo mare Indie has a significant gap between her lower incisors, it's about three possibly four Milimeters wide, I was just wondering if this was normal in young horses and will it impact her grazing in any way?
  • If she is eating ok now than it should be okay later.  It may also change as other teeth come in.  Next time you have the vet out for regular stuff have them look at it.

  • Many horses mouths are not fully mature until age 4. With baby teeth falling out and adult teeth coming in, jaw growing, there are still a lot of changes that a 2 year old's mouth has left to do.
  • OK, thats good. Nothing to worry about as little piggy is eating fine an dandy. Thanks for all your help =]
  • A horse's incisors, premolars, and molars, once fully developed, continue to erupt as the grinding surface is worn down through chewing. A young adult horse will have teeth which are 4.5-5 inches long, but the majority of the crown remaining below the gumline in the dental socket. The rest of the tooth will slowly emerge from the jaw, erupting about 1/8" each year, as the horse ages. When the animal reaches old age, the crowns of the teeth are very short and the teeth are often lost altogether.
