Safe joint supplemant for pregnant mare
  •       My mare is 21 yr old. I know thats old be breeding her but i had her cleared to breed by two different vets and she only gets light riding for a couple hours a week. Even though she's 21 and 7 mo prego, she still loves to run non stop. But anyways, when she gets grained, she pawns at the ground with her left front hoof. She's done since I got her and I have no idea why she does it. But it's cause her to be some what lame. She doesnt limp when she walks, she limps bad when she trots, and has a little limp when she lopes. But no matter what, her leg is never hot.
I asked my vet about giving her Cosequen, he said it shouldn't harm the baby at all but there really aren't any tests out about giving pregnant mare's joint supplements. That's my delima... Should I go ahead with the Cosequen or should try any alternative??
  •   The pawing is simply a yum! response.  Alot of horses do it.  It's not the source of her lameness. Horses will paw with the bad leg because they need to stand on the good one.   Her age, weight, prior use, comformation and&nbsp';p'roir injuries all play a role in her front end lameness.  If you took xrays of her front feet, you will most likely find some degeneration of the coffin bone or other structure.

Moderate exercise is still best for her.  Being able to meander is the best thing to keep her loose.  While joint supplements are safe, I'd first have a conversation with your farrier of ways to make her most comfortable.  Adding front shoes is she's barefoot can go a long way to making her pain free.  The one product not safe for pregnant mares is Devil's Claw.
