thrush
  • Hi. I was looking for the right thrush medicine. I have the thrush buster but its stain everything!! is this the most effective or is there something better out there
  • gold listerine in a spray bottle works well.  Just apply to dry hoof every day, maybe a couple of times a day....
  • wow. thanks. and its so much more inexpensive,,and probablly works so much better!!! Ive had to totally start over with him letting me touch his feet...shoer before my current one did some serious damage to his mind...i now trust my instincts,..
  • most importantly, keep those feet dry.  Might mean you will need to pick out his stall a few more times each day.  (if he is stalled, that is)

The last time I had a bout with thrush, I caught it early and treated with Koppertox.  that was a really long time ago, tho.
  • I had a rescue donkey with a chronic hoof rot problem that ran up the hoof wall just higher than what the farrier could safely cut out.  For a year I kept the donk's hooves as dry as possible, and went through several bottles of Thrush Buster, White Lightening, and Kopertox.  I switched farriers when moving to another area of the county, and the new farrier told me to use 50% bleach solution in a spray bottle and blast the bleach into the hole in the hoof a couple times a week.

The bottom line is, the bleach worked.  Within 2 trimming cycles the hoof rot disappeared, after fighting it for a year.  And it was darn cheap, too.

Now my fiancee does my shoeing work.  We use the Thrush Buster for shallow spots of hoof rot that can be scraped away and for squirting in the old nail holes.  When we come across a horse with deeper pockets of hoof rot (the 2 Haflingers I have had for training both came this way) I use the bleach treatment, and it works like a charm.
  • Years back I had a horse with chronic thrush until we moved to dryer accomodations.  But I found that plain old bleach did as well as anything else to keep it under control.
  • trailrider!  Wichita Falls??  Spent lots of time there at the AF Base.  AND my son volunteered at Whispers of Hope.  Next time I get sent out there - if I ever do again - I'm going to come pester you! [':)']
  • We've only been here for 2 yrs., but so far we like it.  My husband works out at the base.  The summers are really hot here, but at least we don't have the humidity like Memphis!!  We lived in N. Florida for 14 yrs. so I do know summer humidity.  Your welcome anytime!!

  • Awesome!  You guys are military? I'm in the TnAirGuard.  Oh the tales I can tell about that place!
  • I would like to hear your tales, my husband comes home with a lot of his own!
  • I saw he was retired military so he must be out there as a gub'mnt worker.  [':)']  Does he teach?  I thought about applying out there.  I'd sort of like to be in a job that isn't tied to the military so I could retire.
  • He used to train in AATTC, Advanced Airlift Tactical Training, in St. Joe, MO.  He was also in Gunships, Special OPS, in N. Florida.  Now he is a civil service plans officer which is a BIG change for him!!
