My cheap-o solution is get a trough that isn't too big (for ease of cleaning) and set up an automatic valve that a water hose screws into. That's not good for freezing weather, though. And you have to have a water source handy AND you want to be able to monitor it in case you spring a leak or it jams and the trough goes dry. For the most part i've had good luck with these and they're not but about $10.
