Uveitis / Moon Blindness

Uveitis / Moon Blindness
  • Hello. I have an appaloosa named Zephyr who had a worrying case of Uveitis. Lots of tearing and oozing. Blindness is supposed to result in many or most cases. Somewhere short of a year go I decided to see if maybe alfalfa might be the cause. I don't remember why I suspected it.  Maybe because it's a legume (in the bean family) and not a grain (which is a horse's normal diet). Anyway I took her completely off alfafa and guess what since then, with one exception, she's had no symptoms. The one exception was when I bought her some vitamins. After buying I discovered that the main ingredient was alfafa. I gave it to her just to see. Only one dose - and she had a recurrence.

I'm not claiming that alfalfa is absolutely the cause, and being a bit superstitious I don't want to jinx it, but in my case I'm pleased with how it's going.

Just thought I'd pass this along.
  • I have a blind horse from UVeitis.  Interesting finding.
Conversely, my horse wasn't on alfalfa when he contracted it but is now.  [':)']
He gets aspirin every day.  I buy it at TSC and break the tablets in half and soak them with his food.  That's normal therapy for horses with UVeitis.  There's pain involved, evidenced by the squinting.  He will have episodes periodically (only one so far) and banamine is good for those times.  Triple antibiotic in the eyes...yadda yadda.
  • Didn't 3Equines post on Ivermectin and some sort of parasite in horses mention that it can cause uveitis too?
