Update:Naughty for Farrier
  • Danny and I have been working several times a day on space and picking up his hooves.  For respect, I have been using my old crop.  We walk and walk and walk.  When I say whoh, and he doesn't stop immediately to match me,  We move quickly backwards.  He started to catch on to me just stopping my movement.  However, I still use whoh.  When he gets too close to me, I say over and he gets a slap on his shoulder. He is progressing nicely.  Today, I just say over and he is OUT of my comfort zone.  We are working on hooves.  He is heavy on his hooves- always has been.  I followed the "make him move" rule when he pivots, moves or won't pick up his hoof.  Today, when I picked up his front hoof-which is always uneventful and I did a leg rub down- he loves to have a rub down and the adda boy speech- he would bend his back hoof to get it ready for me.  I thought the leg rub would be positive for him.  Plus, he knows it's time for the next leg. I would have to say we are making progress.  When I work with his hooves, we bend, pull and stretch.  He is starting to really balance with the other three and not lean on me.  Does this sound good to you experts?
  • Not an expert, but great progress!

I am told that consistant cues and taking time to rehearse/reinforce his new behavior with praise - especially those leg rubs he likes - will do the job.  Way to go.  I am happy for your success.  It always feels good when they pick up what we want.
  • Woo-Hoo!!!  GREAT JOB!!!
I can't wait till the experts get here and say what they think!![':D']
