  • I 15. and I am trying to help my 11year old friend learn to ride.
my horses is a 16.3hh morgan dutch warm blood cross...
well she loves riding him but is scared to be on her own off the lead or lunge line. can you guys tell me tips on how to slowly teach her to ride.
we did our first lesson yesterday.
  • I'd say let her stay on the lunge line until she really gets comfortable!!  She can do a lot of stuff on a lunge line!  Will your horse stand and let her do "around the world"?  Can you teach her how to do some ground work so she learns the cues and gets to trust your horse better?  trainer101 has some great ground work ideas.  I just saw a recent post that explains the walk trot canter cues really well!  Do you ride English?  (I'm guessing with a horse like that.)  Just don't push your friend and PLEASE have her wear a helmet!  (I bet you do!)
  • yes she has a helmet she never is allowed on with one. and yea we did ground work first she knows the walk trot canter and she not scared on the ground. she even plays with our crazy 2yr old. but when it comes to being in the  saddle even on the lunge shes scared. i even but her on a pony and she was scared. i was like come on amber be calm.  but she can  work on the ground amazingly and even gets him to free jump..
after her 3rd lesson yetserday we did alittle fun and games and it calmed her down some. and her mom is looking for her a horse and i keep telling her to wait because shes not ready for that
  • Maybe a smaller beginner horse of her own is exactly what your friend does need.  Your horse is pretty tall which can be intimidating to someone on his back for the first few times.
  • does she look down? i used to do that when i first started riding and i would wig out cause i was afraid of heights....(now i can get on a ride that takes you 20 stories in the air and drops you....[>:] im weird)

  • I agree with you,
