tying issues
  • I have recently acquired a new horse. He's a wonderful horse and is an absolute joy. There are just a couple small tying problems. When tied alone, or even with another horse in the barn, he is very fidgety and moves his butt side to side. He doesn't neigh or holler though, and sometimes he pushes his butt into me. I gently push him back over but he keeps doing this. I've never had a horse with tying problems or known a horse to move around so much. He doesn't pull back or try to walk off. He does do this one other time besides in the barn. He become very fidgety when tied to the trailer when the sun starts to go down. I'm not sure if he doesn't like the dark, or just gets bored and worked up tied to the trailer while I show my other horse.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can help him calm down in the barn and tied to the trailer at open shows while I have my other horse out or when it starts to get dark?

    Thanks!
  • Appaloosa? Could be moonblind?
How old? Maybe he was never tied much and just needs some patience practice.
  • When you have made sure that it isn't a physical issue, you can go on to retraining.

He could have had a bad experience when tied.  I would start tying training from the begining and maybe you can see at what stage he gets scared and work on that.  Give him lots o encouragement and reward him when he stands quietly for even a minute.  Remember, you can "pet" him with your voice, so you don't need to be constantly touching him.
  • DaneHaven, my thoughts exactly!
Congrats on the new horse!! Love to see pics!
  • He's not an App, and it's definitely not a physical issue. I'm almost certain it was due to a bad experience. His last owner wasn't exactly a good horseman.

    Thanks for the advice!
  • I hope this is the right section and someone can help. I am looking for a good book or video on introducing horses to dogs. If anyone has recommendations it would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!!!
