To lunge or not to lunge?

To lunge or not to lunge?
  • I'm aiming/hoping to get my 9 month old colt Storm, (who you've heard lots about already, because of his love of being a nuisance) into a few local in-hand shows, only thing is he's fat. Not like podgy, like OOH MAMA YOU FAT! I don't have the time or space, mainly time, to walk him miles every day to burn off the chubbawubba, and I was wondering if I could do some light walk and trot lunge work, or would it damage his joints like they say? Which seems absurd seeing how much time he spends careering up and down the paddock. I don't know, any advice is very welcome! Cheers!
  • When I saw the kiddos at the Mustang Challenge with their yearlings all that stuff went out the window for me.  I warn you, however, those kids did some RUNNING!  But they lunged in circles and travelled all over the arena doing obstacles, etc.  (the etc is stuff like jumping through fire and climbing ladders....no kidding!)  I'd love to find some youtube video on those kids!
  • Seems to me that packing around that much extra weight would be just as detrimental to him as lunging.  Just try not to make your circles super small and don't make him move too fast/hard/long.
  • BRILLIANT! Uh oh stormy boy, watch out! Well, he's never been lunged before, and I'm only 5ft2, so I'm thinking I'm going for a drag. Unless you were the size of a small mammoth anyone, no matter how experienced a lunger they were, would get pulled about! Ah well, thank you again guys! youve been a great help! cheers!
  • I did lunging with my gelding when he was a yearling but we changed things up frequently.  If he pulled too hard, I used a rope halter or sometimes a stud chain.  He's really easy to lunge now though don't need to do it anymore ':)'
