  • We got Raven (a Tennessee Walker) early spring and got Buster (a mustang) in May.  We added Jake (a quarterhorse) and Molly (another Tennessee walker) just before Thanksgiving.  Molly and Jake came from the same farm.  Jake is really great to be around unless he is with both Molly and Raven in the pasture.  Then he tries to chase everyone away from them.  If we go down and lead Molly up (she's almost 20 yrs old) everyone will follow.  But if Jake loses sight of Raven (especially Raven) he gets excited.
We have almost 150 acres of pasture, so area is not a big problem ( I think ) but we don't have a trailer, so we can't take Buster and Jake away together but we could put them together in a pasture far enough away that they couldn't see Raven or Molly.  Molly is the head mare, Raven is a sissy.   Right now, Buster and Raven have stalls side-by-side, and Molly and Jake are in a huge stall (until we can build two more) near the other two, but at night Jake can't see Raven like Buster can.
I just want to know if there is still an adjustment period going one,  since we haven't had Jake or Molly for even a month.  And I don't want to see little Buster get hurt.  He is only 13.5 hands and Raven and Jake are 16 hands and Molly is almost 16 hands.
  •   You're seeing some typical dominant gelding behavior.  When put out in a mixed herd they take on stallionlike dominance of the group.  He will protect his harem, chase off all other male horse and he will even see you as a threat.   It won't change with more time.  The other gelding is at risk of being chased through a fence.  He might start to mount and aggressively bite the mares.  Good chance that he will challenge you when you go out into the field to remove one of the mares.  The best solution for all geldings is to keep them together without any mares for them to fight over.
