Gaited Horse Saddles (question)
  • I am curently looking to buy a new saddle for Brisco, my rather wide foxtrotter.  I am looking at a Tennesian.  Anyone use one of those?

What a Fabtron with full quarterhorse bars?  Wintec?

    I welcome your comments.
  • I owned a gaited horse saddle made by Wintec once.  It came with the horse and I couldn't wait to get rid of that piece of crap.  Couldn't use the saddle on any of our horses.  If you set it on the fence it would not even sit straight, it was butt high.

We bought our 1/2 TWH from a Tennesse Walker breeder and she uses regular stock saddles.  Said she didn't like the "gaited" saddles.
  • Some Gaited Horse can use a standard Saddle, but most cannot.

I say cannot because, almost every Horse I have seen that used a standard saddle not designed for gaited horses when changed to a Gaited Saddle, those Horses picked up at least more more gait and most of the time two more gaits than the never had before.

Gaited Saddles have built in shoulder relief and other features need by a Gaited Horse

A non-flaired standard saddle puts too much pressure on the horses muscles around the scapula and though this pressure may not be enough to buck, you may notice little things like head shaking, bumpy transitions between gaits, etc.

Try these people, they helped me and several of my freinds out.

  • Thank you Country Joe.  I clicked on the link and was impressed with their site.  However, I already ordered a saddle from a saddle maker in Missouri: R L Watson.    I actually tried a Tennessian (National Bridle) - the model I ordered had a high swell I didn't care for and though they had other models I may have liked, I went with the Watson because I knew someone who had one I could try and I like it.  So . . . the money is spent and I wait.  He told me it will take roughly 90 days to be made.  Its soon going to be winter so I can make-do with what I have for now!
  • You made a good choice by choosing RL Watson.   We've had them for a lot of years.  They are better than another saddle made, bar none.
  • Thank you thank you thank you, bobf5!  You've helped sooth my mind.  I spoke with Mr. Watson on the phone a week or so ago, I felt reassured then too.  I'm getting quite excited.
  • Brisco,

RL also makes some fine Saddles
