seat size English/western
  • If a man uses a 16 inch western saddle, what size English saddle should he get?  I was asked this question, and since I have rode western all my life, I couldn't answer him.
  • 16" Western = 18" English or Aussie

Just add 2 inches to a Western saddle seat measurement and you have the ENglish equivalent.

The reason for the difference is that English saddles are measured from the front of the pommel to the back of the cantle.  Western saddles are measured from behind the pommel/horn to the cantle.

    So, a 17" English = 15" Western
    19" English = 17" Western
