Update: Haflinger saddle, pics!
  • Well, not very good pics - my camera is on my list of things to replace, SOON!

I got the saddle I ordered from Wyoming Saddlery, it is built on a 7" draft tree.  I had it made for my Halfigner mare, Sweet P.  She is away at the mule breeder's right now, so I test rode it on her daddy, Gibson.  They have the same conformation, only Gibson is a little bigger in height and length, a little more shoulder on him, but the spread of the back is the same. (WIDE!)

I am a little bit worried because the saddle seemed just a hair on the wide side on Gibson; I could feel a little space between his ribs and the bars in the mid region of his back on the barrel side (bottom) of the bars.  When he took a deep breath the gap filled up.  I used one of my many 'fix it' pads (the second step in saddle fitting) and rigged the saddle center-fire, this seemed to make it work.  We had no trouble with slipping, rolling, or shifting front to back on a 6-mile ride up and down hills, and though Gibson did not get warm enough to sweat up under the saddle pad I saw a good impression on the pad when I took the saddle off.

I am just a little concerned that, with his smaller daughter Sweet P the saddle may be too big.  But she has a lower shoulder, and I think that some of the bridging under the bars is from Gib's high stallion-esqe shoulder.  Also, I think the saddle is a close enough fit that with a built-up pad that has a spine relief channel it should work for my mare.  I may have to wait up to 2 more weeks to know; she is at the mule breeder's and she hasn't come into heat yet.... (darn mares!)

The quality was OK, it is definately better than Abetta but I was disappointed in the lightweight leather used for the seat; I chose a slick seat for durability and ease of cleaning, had I known that it was such thin stuff I would have stuck with the suede seat.  The leather on the horn, jockey and cantle is good saddle leather.  The cordura is sewn together well and reinforced with leather under the rigging rings.  It was comfortable and balanced to ride in, but it is WIDE, I think I will be using my Tush Cush just cuz them wide saddles make you sit on yer saddle bones pretty hard!

As you can see in the pics, the line of the bars fits the line of Gibson's shoulder and barrel well.

  • Nice looking!  Have you expressed your concerns to the makers?  I hope it fits your girl like it should!
  • I put it on Gibson again today and reassessed the fit.  This time it fit just like my friend's saddle did - no gaps between his ribs and the bars.  So our ride in the rain last week must have broke it in, which is what I was really hoping and praying for.

Here are some pics of it on Gib without a pad.  I still won't be able to try it on Sweet P until she is back from the breeder, but now I am certain the fit will be the same as it was with my friend's saddle.

  • Here's some close ups of the actual saddle.  Not a bad saddle, really, I don;t have any serious complaints.  Just the seat leather is a bit soft, you can see in the pic what I mean, I am just worried that it will get torn in the various misadventures I encounter in the backcountry.  Leather inside the stirrup straps is thick, but dry.  Nice leather reinforcement under the rigging rings, makes a big difference in the life of oa Cordura saddle.
