Daughter rides Purdy alone for first time

• AllieBaba Posted : 10/31/2009 2:31:39 PM When I say "alone" I mean without me walking alongside. She did great, too. Purdy's a classic...non-spooky, lazy but  not bull headed, not inclined to run anywhere. Even when she decides to head to the barn she does it at a walk. And sound so far (I have no idea how old she is, she's a grade mare. I think she's around 16, more or less).   Pic's a little grainy. I have to leave my kids behind and go to a training all this coming week, M-F, so I'm hoping we can get a little riding in today and tomorrow. Pretty soon the weather won't be cooperative.   Purdy's ears tell you everything you need to know about her. PS, the farrier came out at the end of that week. She'd dig like a dog under the gate..I mean with her nose down and her front feet going....then reach up as high as she could, grab the chain link with her teeth (HARD) and yank it as hard as she could. She'd tear that pen apart.   But as soon as you turn to look at  her, she'd quit. I tried to get pics of it, she didn't do it once we moved around to where she could see us, but when we were saddling and grooming, we were around the corner..I never got a picture of her yanking on the fence but good grief.     She'd also hit it with her head and shoulder, for good measure. • AllieBaba Posted : 10/31/2009 2:54:16 PM   The blue tarp is to cover the flattened nails that were ruining the horses' tails. I went nuts trying to figure out what the heck was up with the tails this summer....tried everything, treated them for lice, for worms (that's regular anyway) made sure they were always sprayed for flies...finally saw big hanks of hair caught on nails that were nailed through from the other side (feed room) and flattened down. The girls would stand in their with their butts to the wall, and walk away and leave half their tails behind. I pulled clumps. Purdy had a bald spot...she rests in the barn a lot more than the Arab does.   Anyway, once I figured it out, things are much better now. I'm going to take pics today. She wouldn't hurry very fast, but she will go right past you if you aren't prepared.
