New gelding

New gelding
• here is the gelding my neighbors got as a rescue from a foreclosed house.  Any ideas what he might be?  Mustang, possibly some Andalusian (popular around here).

• No clue.
He looks pretty good, nice tail. I bet he cleans up nice.
Smaller halter? [';)']
• I know!  It looks like a draft halter almost!  The neighbor bought it.......

Can't wait to see how he sheds out, especially when he's at a healthy weight.  He has high withers, his spine sticks up and his hips are bony even though it doesn't look like it in the picture.
• Looks like an Arab Cross of some sort.  Not a bad looking fellow, apart from the unkemptness and mud...

Lost the house and abandoned the horse huh?  A sad commentary on the times we live in...  I know what it is to lose everything like this.
• Go with your instinct Dana! I had to look up a gray Andalusian to compare and I think that looks pretty close!! Can't wait to see him healthy. He's a LUCKY BOY!! Vet check?
• No, neighbors just took him in.  The lady who rescued him wormed him and had his feet done.  I had the neighbors buy shots so we'll do that this weekend and worm him again.  I'm sure his teeth need to be done.  He's looking better already now that he's out in the pasture getting to move around and be a horse.  I was worried we might now be able to catch him but he comes up to us, seems to be figuring out people are good.  I don't see any freeze brand on his neck.  The crest of his neck is very wobbly?  When I take hold of my horses' crests, they are pretty solid but this guy's seems to have no muscle-tone?
• Wobbly crest?  Hmm... sounds like one of the symptoms of insulin resistance in horses.  Andalusians and Hackneys have that in common.  It would take a blood test to be sure though.

Gosh, I miss having a variety of horse pens.  I can see the round topped gate in the background.  Never really liked them (even though I thought they looked nicer), but up here there's nowhere the variety available.  Not to mention quality of any kind.  Then the prices are enough to give one a heart-attack.
• I'd never heard of that, so like adult-onset diabetes in horses?  Why does it cause the crest of the neck to be wobbly?  Any other symptoms?

He is looking a lot better, not so fearful, acting more like a horse.  He is really excited about his evening scoop of pellets!
• Yes and I don't know.  All I know is that the cresty neck is an indication  and thus something to watch for.  Also, the horses with this kind of indicator are usually the type that have a tendency to be obese.  The dis-advantage of the 'easy keeper'.

"He is really excited about his evening scoop of pellets! "

LOL, sounds like Socks.  I'll put his freshly filled hay net up and Socks stands at the gate&nbsp';p'atiently awaiting the nightly (bucket of) goodies.
• Cushings?

Cushings?

Regarding Riverdance, that's a disturbing possibility.  Her sire was known to produce female offspring that were sterile, one of the symptoms of Cushings.
