New mare, "Lady" is doing great!
  • We rode her tonight for the first time since getting her.  She's put on some weight, got her feet done.  She was a little anxious at first because we turned Jewel out in the arena and Jewel kept racing around and then coming to a skidding halt by the gate complete with flying dirt!  Once Kelly walked her around the arena a couple times, she relaxed and they did well.  Her canter needs some work but Kelly said it's much better when you slow her down and that she slows down by voice commands.  She's got good energy at the walk and trot and has such a sweet look on her face.  We decided to see what she'd do with ground poles since she's never jumped and at first she was a little perplexed but got her walking and then trotting over them.  Put up a little crossrail and she never hesitated, just popped over it.  What a girl!  She's going to be great :)  Since Tahoe is still recovering from his infected leg, Kelly decided she wants to take her to Pony Club tomorrow.

  • I love the first picture because it looks like she is listening so hard at what Kelly is cue-ing her for.  Looks like a perfect match!!  Nice willing mare!!!  Put a real saddle on her!  [':D']

Did you say Jewel was loose in the arena while they were in there riding?  I'm guessing I misunderstood that.
  • She really tries..... she's a tooth gnasher when she gets anxious but she does listen to your voice and Kelly is calm.

No!  That would be a car wreck.... Jewel was loose in there while we were getting Lady ready but I caught her and worked with her while Kelly was riding ':)'
  • Took Lady on her first trail ride with us in a group and she did great!  There were 4 of us and she got along fine, didn't seem to matter who she was near or where she was although she has a wonderful, fast walk so mostly stayed ahead.  She was definitely ready to go, a little anxious and jigged some at first but once she figured out what we were doing, her head went down and she just seemed to enjoy herself.  She was brave, willing to lead most of the time except when we came across some 4 foot boulders blocking traffic, then she followed Cody through.  She didn't spook, even when we had to move over for a trash truck to come by!  She really looks wonderful under saddle, draws herself up, steps along so gracefully.  I'm very pleased with our $500 horse!!
  • Wonderful! She looks really good.

I know Kelly isn't really "jumping" but seeing that horn brought back memories of when I was young and stupid (age has changed but probably not the stupid part) and took my mare over a real jump in a western saddle. Ugh! Got the horn in the belly and ripped all the buttons off the front of my shirt. [8|]
  • WOW! She looks fabulous. Sounds like she has an excellent mind too.
Congrats on your $500 horse. [':)']
