New gelding

• danastark Posted : 2/20/2013 6:35:32 AM I know!  It looks like a draft halter almost!  The neighbor bought it.......   Can't wait to see how he sheds out, especially when he's at a healthy weight.  He has high withers, his spine sticks up and his hips are bony even though it doesn't look like it in the picture. • danastark Posted : 3/2/2013 4:42:52 PM No, neighbors just took him in.  The lady who rescued him wormed him and had his feet done.  I had the neighbors buy shots so we'll do that this weekend and worm him again.  I'm sure his teeth need to be done.  He's looking better already now that he's out in the pasture getting to move around and be a horse.  I was worried we might now be able to catch him but he comes up to us, seems to be figuring out people are good.  I don't see any freeze brand on his neck.  The crest of his neck is very wobbly?  When I take hold of my horses' crests, they are pretty solid but this guy's seems to have no muscle-tone? • studeclunker Posted : 3/6/2013 10:52:33 PM Wobbly crest?  Hmm... sounds like one of the symptoms of insulin resistance in horses.  Andalusians and Hackneys have that in common.  It would take a blood test to be sure though.   Gosh, I miss having a variety of horse pens.  I can see the round topped gate in the background.  Never really liked them (even though I thought they looked nicer), but up here there's nowhere the variety available.  Not to mention quality of any kind.  Then the prices are enough to give one a heart-attack.[font=verdana][/font]  LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • danastark Posted : 3/7/2013 4:42:28 AM I'd never heard of that, so like adult-onset diabetes in horses?  Why does it cause the crest of the neck to be wobbly?  Any other symptoms?   He is looking a lot better, not so fearful, acting more like a horse.  He is really excited about his evening scoop of pellets! • studeclunker Posted : 3/7/2013 6:19:49 AM Yes and I don't know.  All I know is that the cresty neck is an indication  and thus something to watch for.  Also, the horses with this kind of indicator are usually the type that have a tendency to be obese.  The dis-advantage of the 'easy keeper'.   "He is really excited about his evening scoop of pellets!
