The neverending story....
  • Okay, I'll start....

Once upon a time, in a lovely land filled with gentle mountains, friendly forests and sunny  meadows, there was a chocolate colored horse with flaxen mane and tale.  All of the animals admired his beauty.  He had a sweet disposition and the birds often sat on his back.  He loved to feel their little toenails scratching his back as the danced around on top of him.

    One day......
  • a beautiful white mare with a shimmering mane and tail crested the hill.  The chocolate brown horse stared in amazement.  He thought he was the only horse in this place.  She didn't seem to notice him so he.........
  • rared up only to find out that she couldn't see because of one her eyes being attacked by flies. So he then......
  • cantered to her side and swished his flowing flaxen tail over her face, flushing the flies out of her eyes.  When she had regained her composure, she nickered ..........
  • in appreciation of this sweet act of kindness. Her sky blue eyes looked into his dark brown eyes for the first time, and she shyly admired his beauty. She reflected on the hundreds of miles that she had traveled and the long, lonely days she had spent on the hot, dusty trail, before reaching this beautiful land and setting her eyes upon this magnificent stallion. She wondered..........
  • ...if he knew the way to the magic lake.  She heard if she dipped her hooves in the water, she could fly.
  • He could see how drawn her flanks were, dust covered her lower legs like powder.  He nudged her to follow him and headed for the shady trees over the next rise.  When they arrived, she was delighted to see that a burbling mountain stream ran through and eagerly gulped mouthfuls of the icy cold water.  Once her thirst was satisfied, she......
  • took a deep breath of the cool mountain air. The chocolate horse could sense that she was tired and knew that she must also be very hungry, so he then led her to a lush meadow full of knee high, sweet mounain grass. The white horse knew that her body needed nourishment, and she realized that her search for the magic lake would have to wait for another day. As the sun began to set, both horses grazed side by side and.......
  • night fell quietly.  Stars took their places in the skies.  The mare wasn't sure if she could trust this stranger enough to sleep with him nearby but she suddenly felt very weary.  She had come a long way and hadn't a clue where she was.  "So far" she thought with a yawn "he's been very kind" ......
  • The next thing she knew, she woke with a start, her head resting on his flank as he rested beside her.  She jerked her head up, embarrassed at being so forward with a complete stranger but he continued to sleep peacefully.  Soon her eyelids began to droop as the peacefulness of this place and the strength and calmness of the horse seeped through her.  She carefully rested her head on him again, slowly so as to not wake him and began to drift into sleep again.  The sound of ............
  • ... chirping birds brought the little mare gently back to the world of sunshine.  The chocolate horse was nowhere to be seen.  She rolled up on her front feet and pulled her back end upright.  She did a good stretch, her butt in the air like a dog, then gave a shake.  She felt brand new.  That was the first good sleep she'd had in what seemed like weeks.
The mare set about filling her stomach.  She was ravenous.  She wasn't sure where that kind handsome stranger had gone but somehow she felt safe and protected.
  • As the sun rose above the mountains, the beautiful white mare once again grazed in the lush mountain meadow, but this time she was alone. Her thoughts wondered back to the day that she began her journey. The storm that day had been fierce, and the fire that the lightening started had spread quickly in the canyon that had been her home. The band of wild horses that she had been a part of, had ran in fright as the fire licked at their heels. The thick black smoke stung their eyes and made it difficult to see as they ran for their lifes. A strong wind swirled in the canyon and caused the fire to spread its deadly fingers in several directions up the sides of the canyon walls. In the chaos of the fire and smoke, the beautiful white mare had gotten separated from the rest of the herd. She...
  • ..screamed a terrified whinny but the roaring fire drowned it out so completely, that she couldn't even hear her own cry.  Thoughts flew through her head, as if her life were passing before her eyes.  The meadow she grew up in as a filly.  She could almost see her colt friends frollicking.  She could almost feel her mother's gentle nudging.  She found herself closing her eyes peacefully.  Though the glowing embers were painful underfoot, she felt a surreal calm as she imagined her mother's muzzle at her flank.  Following the imaginary guidance she stepped slowly as if in a dream.  Acrid smoke stung her nostrils but she only focused on the calming presense of her memory.
  • (I have been waiting for someone else to join in, but since they haven't, I guess I will go ahead with the story.   ':)'

.....A memory of her mother and the words that she had spoken shortly before she crossed the rainbow bridge. Her mother had told her that even though she couldn't be with her on this earth anymore, she would watch over her from the other side and ask God to send angels to protect her. The beautiful white mare could feel the presence of those angels now. Through the sound of the roaring fire, she could hear the swishing sounds of angel wings. She followed those sounds, and they guided her to a trail that climbed up out of the canyon to a place that was free of smoke and fire. She looked back down into the canyon and tried to catch a glimpse of the rest of her herd, but fire and smoke now filled the entire canyon, and they were nowhere to be seen. She wished that she could fly over the canyon and search for them, but with a heavy heart, she feared that they had not been able to survive. That was the moment that she decided to begin her journey to find the magic lake. She wanted to be able to fly away from danger in the future and .............
  • ..to be able to help guide those who were lost.  As the lonliness set in, the little mare was both exhausted and trembling from shock.  At least she was safe.  Or so she thought....
