Got my driver's license!!
  • Went and took my road test today and I passed! I already drove to the barn and back this afternoon (: I was so nervous (got 16 points off, eh :/) but it turned out ok. The few things I did wrong were some technicalities, braked before pulling against the curb to do a y-turn, pulled too far ahead to turn, didn't go fast enough :P. Overall, I think I did pretty well. The things I got marked down for I'm working on, but I'm so happy to have a little more freedom. Now I just have to prove myself responsible enough (according to my parents) to get the priveledge of letting others ride with me and getting my own car. Hopefully I can do that before school starts!
  • As the mother of a teenager who feels entitled to his own car - offer to do extra chores for gas, or just volunteer to help out without expecting anything back.  Be pleasant as if you're "working for" your parents.  Treat them with the same respect as if they were your boss, signing your pay check.  Try to keep your own stuff picked up all the time and keep your room straight.  I even got my son a divided hamper so he could toss clothes in and they'd be all sorted for washing.  His floor is covered with clothes.
Still, if you ever need them to put gas in the car for you, you might consider some type of barter system so they don't feel like you're just expecting them to hand you money all the time.
Just suggestions.  I'm REALLY looking forward to my son living elsewhere.  He turns 18 in Feb but it's beyond me what he could possibly do to support himself.

Anyway CONGRATULATIONS!!!  A new era!!  DO NOT do stupid things to show off!!!  Don't take risks on the road.  Don't be in a hurry.  Oh heck, I'm Mom'ing again.  sorry
  • Congrats!!  Just remember, put the phone away while driving!!!  Too tempting to check it and way too easy to rear-end someone doing it!  Watch out for those crazy drivers and check the intersections before you pull out even if the light is in your favor.  My girls and I almost got creamed 2 wks ago, making a left hand turn on the light at a 4 way intersection when someone decided not to stop and ran the red light coming down a hill going about 50+.  Scary!!!

In CA you can't drive with anyone under 18 or after 11 pm until you've had a successful 6 mos. behind the wheel.  Has significantly reduced the # of accidents in teens around here although my daughter didn't like that rule!

Nothing like driving along in a car alone with YOUR music blasting, huh??
  • Yeah, what Hunter said goes for me, too.

Just remember that you can not be too careful when out on the road and always, always watch out for the other guy. Keep your doors locked! If you have car trouble, never, ever stop on the side of the road if you can avoid that, but always try to go to a well lighted, open business. Even if you are rear ended or in an accident, don't get out of your car and if you are still able to drive your car, drive to a safe area. Always be aware of your surroundings. I say all of this, because a young girl who lived in our part of the state, was rear ended one night. She stopped on the side of the road, actually on an interstate highway ramp. There was a gas station within site, but she didn't go to it. The guy who rear ended her, kidnapped her, then raped and killed her. Yes, I am trying to scare you. You need to be scared. Better safe than sorry. Never talk on your cell phone or text while driving! Leave your cell phone in your pocket. Don't leave it in your purse. If you are in a wreck and your cell phone is in your purse, your purse might go flying into the back seat. If you are injured and can't move, you need to have your cell phone where you can get to it.

    I am a mommy, too. [':D']

On a brighter note, congratulations on passing your driving test! I am sure you will do fine.
