Unethical breeders, opinions please
  • Here's a hypothetical:  You know someone who is a breeder.  You find out they are unethical and their animals are horribly neglected.   The animals that did not already die are rescued.  Later you find out they are back in business since they kept the breeding females.  You suspect this person is a collector and might be suffering from mental illness.  Do you feel obligated to report them?  Should you speak to them about their problem?  Notify the humane society about your suspicions?  Pretend all is peachy and coo over the new babies?  Ignore it and hope for the best?
  • my perosn opinion is to report them no human should ever treat an animal that way no matter what.I mean after all the animals didn't ask for it!
  • Rescued after being horribly misrepresented perhaps?  After countless people sent money, feed, tack and support that were not likely used for the rescue animals, but to perhaps feed the "keepers" that had already been randomly bred again?

I don't think the humane society would do anything if the current animals were in good condition, but encouraging such behavior by gushing over the individual and the new babies is appalling IMO.

I don't know that you can do anything at this point, I think the situation would have to have been reported when it was at its worst, with vets and haulers hemming and hawing about details just to get the animals out of the current situation.   That would have been the best case scenario, and having a judge issue an order banning ownership of said hypothetical animals on a permanent basis.
  • AHHHH please excuse my typos
  • Oh and brokenaranch i agree with you 100% i think i miss understood the question at first.
  • Broken A is right.  If they were in ill shape then they would be forced to act but as is their only option would be to watch the breeders at different intervels to check on the horses condition.  I don't think they are allowed to act unless the horse is in danger or that is how it happens around here.

I would have to turn them in anyhow even if nothing was done.  Then I would have to get some thing like a patition or perhaps just start talking to some of the local police that you might know personaly to see what your options are.  We finally got them to seize a couple horses that were on the verge of starvation last year.  The 2yr old stud colt was so weak he could't stand up for the short trailer ride to the foster.  It took months to get some action on that and it came down to the foster and several others confronting the owner and demanding that he hand them over.  Later the police got involved but with pictures and testamony everything worked out.

I hate to see people do that with any animal be it dog, cat or horse.  Thats just mho though.
  • When the animals were confiscated the first time - what was the court ruling?  Many times in cases of neglect where animals are taken, the courts will rule that the person is not allowed to have more than X number of animals (if any at all) and are no longer allowed to breed.

If there was not court ruling - then are the current animals in decent condition?  If they are in decent condition, the best you can do it talk to them.  If the current animals are in questionable circumstances and you truely believe its a hording situation - then report them.

However, even if you report them - if you truely think this person has a hoarding mentality - don't just drop them, try to lend emotional support to them or at least make sure that there is family doing that.  I know it is against what we want to do, but usually hoarding stems from mental issues and can include depression.  There is a recent breed who had her cats confiscated and shortly after that they found her dead with pill bottles on the floor by her.  Tragic situation.
  • the "keepers" that had already been randomly bred again?

That just hurts me so bad when previous babies were treated as throw-away's.

I know the humane society would find healthy animals until there are some older babies starving while the more recent litters are being showered by affection.  It would be different if there was a market.  But when peope "have to"  rather sacrifice and CHOOSE to help the best they can.....  Only to have more breeding. [:-]  I guess resuers get crapped on frequently in this world.

Great points, everyone.  No, j_c, it wasn't a siezure.  It was just a bunch of kind hearted, gullible souls who went above and beyond to help someone they cared about... for the love of animals.   It really DOES go against natural inclination to even care after all that but it seems so hopeless.  History repeating itself.
