Missed one of the outdoor cats at feeding time this morning (4:30 am). I found him at six when I went into the mow to get some hay. He was all curled up and when I petted him he did not get up and he didn't purr. I knew something must be wrong. I picked him up and he purred but when I checked him out he has hurt his leg. I think it is broken. Called the small animal vet (thought I would get a machine at this hour) and woke up a sleepy girl. Gave her the info and she said they would call when the office opens. I put the little guy on a pillow in a box in a room in the house, the same one he recovered in from his neutering. Common sense says, "barn cat, euthanize", heart says, "fix". I wonder if he will get a cast?....guess you know that my heart is ruling on this one. He is the only one of the feral cats here that will allow me to pet him away from the feeding area. I have to give him a chance to survive.

Ahhh, poor kitty. Glad you found him and are taking him in...... I'm like you, can't help but give them a chance......

Just got back from the vet's. The leg (tibia) is broken. He said he could refer me to a specialist who for about $1000.00 could put a plate in it and fix it up like new, or, I could just take him home and let him heal himself, or, I could leave him there and he will keep him overnight and put a splint on it that will hopefully make it stable enough for his body to heal itself. I opted for leaving him there for the splint. For a cat who has only known two people in his life, he was really good with the Dr. and even let him pick him up. I get him back tomorrow morning if he isn't too groggy. If he is, I can go back and get him in the afternoon. His room is almost ready for him. Just have to get him his own litterbox. (sigh of relief, I like this kitty)

] I was rooting for him and when I was reading your options I picked the same one as you! My best cat, Sox, is very old. We broke his leg the first day we had him! That was um..... about 15 years ago.
What color kitty is the little sweetheart?

I named him Boots, but my husband calls him Blackie so I guess Blackie it is. He kind of wanted to be a 'tuxedo' cat, but didn't quite make it. He has a small strip of white on his face, white sox and some white on his belly and chest. Not very evenly marked. He is such a sweetie and for being raised feral, he is really friendly. He is the only outside cat here that will accept pets away from where they get fed. He lets me pick him up, too and I often bring him inside to visit with the house kitties. They don't really like him, but he really doesn't seem to mind.

Thank you for your interest. By the way, I am glad to read you like Standardbreds. I worked with them for years and as a rule, they are pretty sensible horses to be around.

Black and whites have always been sweethearts in my experience. Sox is one! Also, my first cat, Mittens, b&w, was so feral as a baby - they lived in a woodpile. She's the first one I could coax out and nab! [ ':D'

] My son and his wife moved out and left a black and white I thought was psycho but she's turning out to be pretty sweet. (I think he has that affect on animals.)

And standardbreds? They're the black and whites of the horse world. LOL [ ':D'

] I just love them! Very smart.

Is Carmy/Major (can't tell which one!) about to get a smack!? Cats always look at dogs with such disdain....... like, yuck, such disgusting, slobbery, uncouth beasts! Blaaahhh!!

My black/white cat, Tucker was so wonderful ':)'

Sox is moving his paw out of the way. Carmy is after a treat I stuck up there to try to get her in the picture. You can never tell how things will turn out with animals! (as you well know!) Sox is one of the most NON aggressive cats I've known. I took him to the vet one time in a crate. We set the crate on the table and he just moseyed out.... strolled back in.... ate the dog treat we gave him... seemed to enjoy getting a shot.... The vet was a little perplexed at him. [ ':)'

Brought Blackie/Boots home this morning. His splint looks like it has part of one of those plastic colars that go around the animal's neck sticking out the top by his hip. It is taller than he is and the first thing he did when I got him home was run under the couch and catch the darned thing on it and then he cried. Tonight I found him hiding in a corner. (I was away at an auction all day) I picked him up and held him until he purred and then put him on his pillow. He kept purring and checked out the proximity of his food and water dishes and acted like he just might stay there. Yes! He will get better, he will adapt, and someday he will be able to climb again.

Back to the auction. I was high bidder on a lawn jockey. I have admired this one for a lot of years and now it is mine!

Oops...forgot to say I'm glad Blackie Boots is home and resting. He will be back mousing in no time. Poor kitty. He's got a good mom.
