thread to the public
  • morning all.... i thought instead of doing the email thing, we would put together the thread of the new format here then post it.

so.. we know that the new format (to look like dog.com) will happen in mid octoberish and by reading threads over there it was quite a shock.  and we know that folks here tossed a fit about any changes that happened too here.

so, I think for sure, however we write, i think we should encourage folks to have a look at the dog forum.  they dont have to be members to cruise things.  my first thought when MK said what was up, is OMG.... they are gonna FLIP!  but as i looked at it a little, it reminds me of pintrest.  im sure just about everyone has looked at something on Pintrest, so maybe it wont be so bad.

with luck the posting problems will go away and if they are, we can hope for a quick fix.

I stated in the meeting (which im positive has to do with the DST and only my computer reminded me of it) that change in the forum was always a bad thing and with a heads up, things should be smoother.  also... that if the big problems of folks not 'being here anymore' was due to posting issues, folks will come back.

Personally, we need to get rid of some of the subsections...  classifieds for sure.  and add if there is a need.

I think even input from our 'old timers' that are still here (hunterseat comes to mind) not even sure we have many left since the old crash!

so... since im still recovering from dog show miles.... here's my start...  lets hash this out over the next week and present it to jonathon (unless he doesnt pop in ;)

New Look is on the horizon!
Greetings to all our Horse.com Members.  We would like to let you all know that a new look and format is coming here to the Forum!  We are letting you know because 1) we know that the shock factor over the first cup of coffee isn't good, and 2) we know that very often, our members have great ideas!

You can head over to dog.com (no signup needed) and see what their new forum looks like.  To give a heads up, it resembles a grid format, similar to Pintrest.  There are main catagory tabs in which you can see trending topics and sub topics, or you can click on a tab, so see all main sections.

We will be making some changes as well in the sort of sections and subsections, but as we grow, those subsections can be returned.

It is with great hope that this new format will catch on with everyone and you will be able to navigate much easier the topics that you are following, and new and old faces will be able to join us again.

Again, we want your input, ideas, and gripes to make things great!

    Thank you!

    ok.... pic away!
  • i also looked quickly at when the areas were last posted in, so we can get an idea as to what we should get rid of for now.  i was actually surprized that the classifieds have been used this year, but i think we can condense stuff.  the arts and wither watchers sections havent been posted in since 2011. so i can see getting rid of those.  several more havent been posted in since 2012.

ok... im off to work on horse blankets!  gotta get them done so i can get them back to their owners!  its trying to get chilly here =) lol
  • I think the classified's section get used more by one-time people who have things to sell or want to post their businesses. We can do away with that one. The letter looks good. I have some problems navigating dog.com, but I've never been on Pinterest. Most people probably have, so it's only my personal problem. ':D' Some of the oldies may come back. It seems that there was a general lack of caring by the "hosts" regarding this forum and whether it was working. I believe that some of the people who have come and gone since the "crash" have left because of some of the same problems that caused the original folks to leave: difficulty posting. Since I can no longer make paragraphs, you'll have to wade through this mess to see what I'm saying - that is ONE problem. I have just chosen to deal with it, but I don't post as much as I might because of it.
  • you are right Kathi. &nbsp';p'roblems posting is a huge issue and i know thats why we have lost folks!  when i said at the meeting that i was one of the ones that couldnt post they were shocked!  i told them it took me a couple months to figgure out why i could post on one computer and not the other =(

Im not on pintrest much either, just the grid format remidned me of it.  if you float over the tabs on the top, you get drop down boxes, or if you click on the last one (the forums) you get the main list.

it will be nice to see what others above you posted as well...  without quoting people if you dont want.

  • GoodjJob on the notice!
I do think a condensed version would be better to launch a new format.
The "Classifieds" could be condensed but it has been a catch all for the one time advertising posters.  If it is gone then we will have to no longer allow *any* advertising posts?

    Wither watchers-can be gone.
Arts- was mostly people trying to advertise anyway so it can go.

Campfire (recipes)- can go into Not Horse Related.

    Trail riding- Keep

Showing of all kinds could go into one section and expand later as necessary?

Durango, I have been paragraphing for you and Dana.

  • I agree with what you've said here, DH. The showing part might be divided into English and Western. I don't see a need to divide into "Hunters", "Dressage" and whatever. Folks can put things like that in their subject lines.

I'm using Chrome today, and it looks like I can change fonts, colors, make paragraphs, BUT I was using Firefox and could not. I think that's a forum programming problem - them not testing and making sure the forum works in all browsers (or at least the most used ones).

Looks like the E-meeting will be sometime next week.  Have a good weekend you two.
  • I think the problem in the differant browsers was something that became an issue.  when we first came here, it was ok, so there was some change that happend in the last couple years.

if i remember right, we had an English section and a Western section.  I begged Jamie for a Driving section, id like to keep it.

I sent a note to Jonathon asking him to stop in and approve the message and maybe we can post it soon.

What section shall we put it in?  Im almost leaning to putting it into General... just cuz.

  • Yes,
    Driving should stay.
And yes, General Chat would be the place for the initial notice.

  • I agree. The message should go in General. That's where most people will see it.

I've downloaded Google Chrome. I can change fonts, colors, use smilies and make paragraphs with it. No luck with I.E. or Firefox. [:@]
  • glad you are working again Kathi!  lol it really sucks when you cant do what you want to do.....
  • Last month there was about a 2 week period where I was dead in the water. Couldn't post or edit, nothing.
Then suddenly everything was fine again?
