Tail Growth
  • I have a roping horse that we would like the tail to grow longer. Any ideas?
  • Not an appy, right?  Genetics would be against you. ':)'
I know some people keep the tail bagged up or wrapped.  That seems like it would be itchy.  I know others who have a stroke if you are too vigorous with your brushing so.... I guess taking it really easy when you do comb/brush.  Then there's good nutrition and making sure there's not wormies making the horse itchy back there.  Black oil sunflower seeds provide oil and stuff that makes the coat and feet nice so that might help.  I stopped using them when I went to a good Senior feed which provides the same stuff plus more.
I'd love to see your horse!
  • Hunterseat pretty much covered it all ':D'.....I have heard of a product called MTG. I bought some last week to use on my Arabs mane and tail but havent tried it yet......something to look into ':)'
  • Thanks for the info! He is not an appy he is quater. I will try some things right now we are using Cowboy Magic to detangle the hair before we start to comb that seems to help some and I am going to start wrapping his tail cause it seems to get caught in the fence. I have also put a pitcure of him up for you.
  • MTG does help.  Some horses have bad reactions to it though so just keep an eye on it.  Otherwise, like hunt said, don't brush it too hard (i've heard to finger comb only and use lots of detangler).  Lots of people swear by putting it up in a bag (or vet wrap, or old tube sock, etc...) too.
  • csmith17 you have a very nice horse, my mare is a retired header (she injured her back left leg pulled a tendon and can longer compete in roping her reining or barrels like she used to before i got her )............on to the subject my mares tail is touching the ground the only thing i do to it is; i condition it once every 2 weeks i brush it once a week i hand pick all the knots out and put a detangler in it  and brush it from the bottom to the top then i just leave it alone i dont mess with it for another week or so and her tail touchers the ground... i have to braid it when i ride her to make sure she doesnt mess it up or steps on it ...ooo and the mtg does help i have used that but its to messy and its smell to me....Good Luck
