Losing muscle tone already??

Losing muscle tone already??
  • My 7 year old mare always loses weight during the winter, no matter what.  Up until this year, I haven't felt there was much I could do.  She has shelter and I start feeding grain, including pellets, in the fall.  This year, our hay is a lower quality but they are on free choice hay and still have grass in the pasture.

Her lower chest isn't too bad yet, but when I ride her I can see her front shoulder blade stick out.  Its like her scapula, if a horse had one, is showing.  Typically when I look down I am used to seeing muscle there.  My question was, do you have horses that are starting to lose muscle tone?  Its not even cold here yet!
  • My first question is this: do you work your horse less in the fall and winter? If so, thats what is causing her to drop muscle tone. My mare drops muscle tone in the winter because i dont work her as much.
Also, since your hay is of less quality, have you changed your grain to help make up the nutrients not in the hay?
I personally use Purina Equine Senior on both my horses. Equine Senior is great for horses 2 years and up. I find it almost normal for horses to drop a little muscle in the winter. They are using their energy to keep warm instead of build muscle.
    Hope this helps ':)'
  • the only thing that poped into my mind was what dodgegirl89 said, not working your horse during winter sadly i wish i could work my mare in winter but we  get soooo much freaken rain its hard  to do so......but by not working your horse in the winter than can cause losing muscle tone.....
  • Since I've started them on SeniorGlo, the muscle tone and weight has REALLY picked up!  Plus I have some good hay and they munch 24/7.  They ALL look better!
  • I don't think either one of them need more calories.  Their tummies and butts look pretty good. Its just the front shoulder point on the pony, and I haven't been riding lately so its pretty much a mute point.  Flanks are full, ribs covered, I'm not going to buy more pellets.  They have oats and pellets now

I never knew though, that pellets could grow mold.  I bought a bag one time that had been re-taped at the store.  Found some mold and the pellets were being stored in a frigid garage!  Scary huh? I think I will stick with oats.
  • Well, i did a little experiment with what i was feeding my senior horse. a short while after i posted here, i realized that i could no longer give lessons due a worsening back injury. well, that meant less cash flow and not enough to buy my Equine Senior as often as i wanted to. What i decided to try was the best decision i have made so far and it requires much less Equine Senior [':D']

I do this in the morning after i feed breakfast:

Put a couple cups of Beet Pulp Pellets in the bottom of a 20qt bucket and fill half way up with HOT water and let sit for a couple hours or until the beet pulp has soaked up the water (i do this in my shower...haha). I then add a one quart scoop of the Equine Senior and mix. i also add a scoop of Cool Calories 100 and Silver Lining: Joint. I also give him a scoop of Hoof and Hair Guard. I feed him this mash for lunch with a small flake of hay.

(my mare gets a scoop of Stategy GX with Hoof and Hair Guard. She is only 11 and a very easy keeper [';)'])

My main point is that all he gets is one scoop of Senior feed a day and he looks fantastic!!!!!!!! The warm mash mix is also very inviting for the cold days we are having.
  • My horses would explode if they got a quart of Senior Glo twice a day. Two get about a pint - two get about a half pint.  I weighed it once but can't remember the weights.
