Pigeon Fever Anyone?

Pigeon Fever Anyone?
  • It's rampant here at Beale AFB in northern California. Is anyone else seeing this in their horses? [:'(]
  • I had a horse with pigeon fever back in 2002, but none since. I kept him with the herd, and fortunately he didn't share with anyone else.
  •   It's beem prevelent in the area for the past few months.  A few friends' horses have come down with it but I'd managed to dodge it.  Well, my luck ran out this week.  I had one come down with it last Monday and another one is just starting.  The mare just starting looks bad.  Her whole neck and chest is involved.  It snowed here yesterday and never got above freezing today so didn't want to lance it until the weather improved somewhat.  The fun starts tomorrow.
  • Seems like a friend of ours has a horse with Pigeon Fever too. I have never heard of it until she told me about her horse. IT sounds very painful too.
  • Yes I have a friend whose horse has this also Snazz.  In fact, the horse came down with it about 3 weeks ago and the vet told her to let it run its course ..but expect the horse to get to the point of not being able to lower his head to the ground because the swelling and pain will be so bad.  Poor horse... this sounds just awful!

    Does lancing the swelling help?
  •   Lancing it will help if it's ready to go.  The biggest advantage is to capture the most pus for disposal and not let it open on it's own and dribble all over the place.  You can also open it up at the lowest point making drainage more complete and faster.
  • I have a friend who has had pigeon fever in at least one of his herd every year for the past 3 years, and a girl in our church who&nbsp';p'icked up an older horse had that horse die because she contracted it a couple of  years ago and ruptured internally.

I've been lucky in that I haven't had to deal with it, thank goodness.
