Limping Horse w/o Heat or Swelling?

Limping Horse w/o Heat or Swelling?
  • Hope I got the right place for this--I haven't been on here for a while...

My family was gone last night, and my friend fed my two horses. She said that the second horse, Buddy, was limping. I was surprised to hear this, because he is 8 yo and healthy. We went home and discovered he could barely walk. It's his left front leg that he is favoring, and when he walks, it's a very stiff walk and he doesn't bend that leg at all. I could not find any swelling or heat on his body/leg/hoof. I did see a new cut on his neck though--it's about halfway up his neck on his left side and only hair deep, but it does have a partly "U" shape, so he may have been kicked or bitten.

He has his normal appetite, and drinks his amount of water. I separated Buddy from the lead horse so Buddy wouldn't get pushed around more. Today he is a little better but quite careful with the foot; he will rest it on the ground like horses do with their back feet sometimes.

Any ideas on what it all could be? I will most likely call the vet out tomorrow.
  • I encourage you to go over the leg with a fine tooth comb.  Honestly, Tanya's horse had what amounted to a pin-*** on the back side of his pastern and.....  $25K later (and that was WITH insurance)....  He might have gotten into it with someone, since it looks like he was kicked... and twisted something.  If you're sure there's nothing in his foot that could be cleaned out, he may have an abscess.  But I think there's usually some heat in the hoof....   I hope you find out.
  • Thanks for the suggestion--it turned out he had an abscess.  Thankfully it wasn't a 'bigger issue'
  • Our therapist (she does Bowen, trigger point, and other techniques) suggested a mixture of Indian clay, castor oil, and eucalyptus oil, which you pack on the foot and then wrap.  After it dries it just crumbles off.  It draws the abscess out.  I hate that it takes so long for them to heal but I'm with you, at least it's nothing more serious, though I'm sure they're painful!
  • Oh yeah, Buddy flinched when the vet found the abscess!  But now he is having his first soaking in a boot and is standing normally, so I think he feels better already.
  • Thats what i was thinking abscess well im glad it wasnt anything bigger
