I was always told it was for extra weight gain but i have been reading up on it and it also gives your horse more energy. but i was also told a while ago that peanut oil doesnt cause the extra engery. which leads me to the question what is the diffrence between all the oils (corn, vegtable, conla, peanut) and what is the best? [] I don't know much about nutrition.  I try to do what I think is best.  I was just thinking about a seminar I went to and the vet was saying how the people who formulate horse feed have PhD's in equine nutrition and have formulated complete feeds yet we feel we have to give them a bit of this type a bit of that type.....  okay, I got sidetracked.  sorry. • TanyaC97 Posted : 8/5/2009 12:49:12 PM Welcome back.   Yes there used to be more people here, and believe it or not we have more now than we did about 4 months ago.  Slow pace, but easy to follow.   I have only used corn oil and in moderation at that.  It also helps add some shine to a coat.  For me, corn is about the only one I would use.   I have found that I try to avoid "sweet" feeds and corn, oats, etc.  I feed a low carb grain, grass in the summer and hay.  I also feed a complete liquid vitamin that works well, not cheap but works.  Free choice mineral/salt block.  Due to medical issues last year with one horse I was able to talk with more than a few vets about what I feed and they all said what I do works for me and my horses.  That is a key, each horse is different.   I believe that keeps it closer to what a horse would eat in the wild works better, they do not eat molasses in the wild.  LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • JetLagaside Posted : 8/5/2009 9:50:57 PM I feed oil for the fat content.  With my first horse he needed a hight fat low calorie diet and corn oil was an easy way to get  him the fat he needed. • questisthebest Posted : 8/6/2009 4:58:25 AM Oil has a lot of benefits for the horse. The first is as you mentioned, it helps a horse gain weight. I haven't noticed any horses get "hot" from oil, but like carbohydrates, fat also has calories which are a source of energy. People like oil because every gram of fat has more calories than a gram of carb or protein. So people can feed less of it for more result. Fat also tends to give the horse a healthy, shiny coat which is why a lot of show people add oil to grain. For feeding i always used vegetable oil, but that was mostly because if you got into peanut and other types of oils, it can get quite expensive. I would highly doubt though that peanut oil "compared" to other oils won't make a horse "hot". Some oils like fish oil that are very high in the essential fatty acids may have more health benefits, but I don't think it's worth the cost really. • questisthebest Posted : 8/6/2009 5:18:10 AM As for the formulated feeds being balanced, that is absolutely correct. An all around mineral supplement should not be added to a formulated feed, nor should any other type of grain such as oats, corn, barley, etc. or another formulated feed. It changes the balance of the feed and may affect whether or not the horse is getting the right nutrition. There are certain things however that can be added with no problem. Fats are one of those, such as oil, flax, BOSS, or fat suppements for weight gain. Other things such as joint supplements, medications, etc. are also acceptable as long as they aren't already formulated into the feed.
