Mini's with potbelly problems
  • [:(]Hi I have 5 miniature horses two  are 4 years one  is 1 and the other two are
under a year.  All are healthy regular vet check-ups and shots. They are on a
worming schedule from the vet and have constant hay and also give some horse feed and mare and foal to one. One just had a  baby June 1 and everything is good but her hips show.  Fat belly everything else good the other 4 yr old gave birth last year and she was the same but it takes forever to get the weight back on the hips.  What am I doing wrong[:(]
  •   I've never known a mini who could be fed hay free choice.  They get obese just looking at hay.

A big gut often comes from mature hay that is high in fiber.  The gut has trouble breaking down the cellulose and it just "sits" there.  Start by checking your hay.  What stage was it cut and baled at?  Are the leaves tender and slim or course?  Change variety of hay.   Deworm than hit them with a probiotic to reestablish their gut flora than put the older ones to work.  They need to muscles on the top or they'll carry their extra weight low.
  • Thank you, I will try your idea. It sounds good.
