My horse had a serious allergy to something we never found out what it was. See old posts for Scratchy Apache. it was awful, he even choked twice due to this allergic reaction. He had bloody sores all over his head and neck, he'd rub himself raw, but never any further down. Blood tests, vets, and every topical thing you could think of later, all to no avail!
I put him on whole flax seed. It was AMAZING!!! After 8 months of feeling terribly itchy and having no hair and bloody scabs, his hair began to regrow within 48 hours. My little guy, 14.2, eventually took 1 cup am and 1 cup pm with feed. That was his magic number. If I fed less, he still would break out. His coat stayed glossy and true to color all year long (where previously I had to give him supplements to keep his coat during winter). His hooves had started to get a little separation due to the spring moisture, and 30 days exactly later, the farrier made a comment on how wonderful they looked and were better than ever! I kept him on this until his tragic accident, and he'd still be on it today, if he had not suffered such a horrible injury.
Now wait, I know there's controversy on whether to feed it whole or ground, but ground loses it's efficacy within 7 days, and only lasts if refrigerated. The seeds that are 'seen' in the manure are the shells. When whole flax seeds are 'wet' they emit a mucilege, like a gel substance, and in that gel is how the nutrients are released. Put some in your mouth and you'll see. They taste like a bland sunflower seed. So it doesn't have to be ground to be effective. Matter of fact, when feeding whole flax seed, another huge added benefit, is that the mucilege that is produced upon entering the mouth and stomach, is that it 'grabs' sand on it's way through! My horse NEVER had sand after using whole flax!
By the way, there's other posts on flax seed. One thing I ran across while researching was that wild horses eat the flax seed. When given a choice they will eat it readily. they instinctively know what is best. Anyway, alot of what I found is on that other post.
OP - You might have even more success if you give the same amount twice daily. If you switch to whole flax, you'll see results even quicker and with great success! I buy mine where I get my feed, about $32 for 50 lbs. but the health food stores also sell it, sometimes very similar in cost, sometimes higher. Check around. This is a great supplement that has many, many other benefits, as well as immune building, and it is so cheap.
Good luck and I wish you continued success!!!!![
