shoulde? leg?
  • denver has been limping on his front left side and i just do not know what to do. there is no swelling and no heat. i had shoes put on his front two feet to see if that would help as his heels grew out to the conformity of the shoe but it hasnt seemed to do much..... could it be his food maybe.  i dont know
  • Limping to what degree, dead lame, slightly ouchy etc.  At what gaits is he lame, worse if he goes faster?
What did the farrier say when the shoes were put on?
Have you tried bute for a few days to see if that helps?
  • I'm just now figuring out what your thread title says.  YES it can be his shoulder.  How long has he been limping?  If he twisted something in the pasture from frolicking it might take a while for it to get better.  Like 6 weeks or so.
On the other hand, it may be a blow-out/abscess trying to come out.  I really don't see putting shoes on a lame horse.  It's pretty easy to tell if it's his heel, I'd think, depending on the surfaces he's walking on - it should be worse on harder or rougher ground.  (I might be wrong there)
You might just need to give him more time.  Where are you located?
Could he have been kicked? How big is he?
  • i had shoes put on because i show him. it seems to get worse the more i work him. i took him out just for a nice pleasure ride and he got ouchy.... its been this way for about two months now. i tried bute for a few days back in sept. before my show and it worked for a few days. then it came back. i thought it might be an absess but its been quite a while
  • Let's see, how old is he?  Could be arthritis.  I forget if you've had him checked out by a vet?  If it's a soft tissue/muscle injury it could take a while to heal while still being worked.  If it's a ligament/tendon injury, he definitely won't heal while being worked.  I'd have the vet out to look him over if you haven't already.

Goodluck, such a bummer to have a lame horse.
  • What classes do you show?  How long have you had him?  Let me know when we hit 20 questions! [':D']
I hope Denver gets better for you quick.  Mine get glucosamine in their senior feed. (for joint health)
  • Worse the more he is worked sounds like soft tissue or tendon, structural stuff.

If he was mine I would be calling the vet.
  • he is six. i ride and show english now although i have ridden western since before i could walk. ive done walk trot and showmanship clssses with him so far and hes been a ribbon winner every time.  i would like to get into some jumpin next year but we will see. im calling the vet today to see if a muscle relaxer and a few weeks rest with minimal work will help
