DMSO
  • Can anyone tell me if using DMSO in scar tissue will help to minimize it?

My mare cut her knee last year and there is some thick scar tissue at the site of the wound that I haven't been overly happy about. A couple of weeks ago she ripped her knee open again in the exact same spot, only worse. This is self inflicted, she HATES to be in. She either pawed and banged it pretty good or reared up in her stall to see what her neighbor was doing and caught it on the way down (which seems more likely) but I found a blood spot on the opposite wall by her window.

This I know because she was in her stall no more than 15 minutes at PM feeding time.

So a vet call for stitches and SMZ's was in order. So the vet stitches her up (just the ends as they never would have stayed in all the way across the wound, and the significant amount of thick scar tissue from last year)  and says...you got it....stall rest! Hmmm, this is how it happened, how am I going to pull this off? I tried Calm and Cool paste and did pick up some Ace tablets to keep her calm during feeding time when everyone else went in and out.

Anywho...2 days later when I could change the bandage, the stitches had already ripped through...so now I am pressure wrapping it to keep the flap flat, but this thick scar tissue is still bothering me. So I am asking if anyone has any experience in using DMSO to help minimize scarring?
  • I have had success with "Wonder Dust" and with a more generic proud flesh powder.  It seemed to eat away the new growth of tissue I did not want and yet not hurt the tissue that needed to be there.  As for the knee, you can get too much restriction with some pressure bandages, but you can put a spider bandage on it. You would have to put a regular 'overnight' or stall bandage on the lower part of her leg to hold the knee bandage in place.   With a quilted wrap or even gauze under the knee bandage you could hold things in place without applying too much pressure.

I have used DMSO for leg problems in the past, but not for scar tissue.  It is certainly a product to be careful with.  We always used rubber gloves and then it still seemed to get into your system and you could taste it.

    I hope this has helped.
