problem with a mini
  • [H5]Hi I am new on here and i am hoping to get a little advise...i have a mini that is 3 years old and up until today he has been just fine... when my husband went to feed this morning he was laying in his stall... when we tried to stand him up he would not move.. he was eating but he was acting like his legs could not hold him up... he was wobbleing around and if my husband got him to stand up he was real shakey .. as of the time of me posting this we have gave him salt block and electolites ( called a vet and they said to give him that ) he has been going to potty ok .. he has been wormed also... my husband has him standing with the help of a homemade  lift system it is just holding him up he is touching the ground and everything good and he can move around with no problem.. but if we take him out of the lift he will stand for a little bit but then he falls down... he is my granddaughters and i hate to have to put him down..  we love all our animals ... but just  having a hard time figureing out what is wrong with this one ... any advice will be appericated.. thanks ..[/H5]
  • Sounds neurological, maybe.  Or something he ate in the pasture?  I don't really know what "wobbles" are but it's an actual health problem, you might look it up.  I hope he gets better!!!  I know you must be worried.
    Welcome, by the way!!
  • WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am very glad you called the vet, that is the part people forget.  It seems odd that he eats fine, but doesn't want to move.
I have to agree with Hunt that it sounds Neuro, based.  Do you have and weird plants, weeds around he might have gotten into?  Just a thought.

    Keep us posted.
  • Have you given vaccines recently?  Toxins in his diet?  We had a pony, not a mini, who was allergic to his vaccines and would stiffen up terribly, shake, and not hardly move after his vaccines even if he was pretreated with bute.  We were going to go to titers shortly with him when his owner took him back.
  • he was doing a little better today but i was giving him pedialight and he fell done again... when i say wobbles i meant it is like his legs are to weak to hold him up ... he real skinny took a stool sample to vet and will find something out soon .. he is still eating good he was moving around today... slowly but he was up on his own... will keep you posted thanks
  • Good point about the shots-- I wonder if the wormer might be doing something.
Give his little nose a kiss on it from your board buddies.

    Thanks for the update.
  • update on our little one ... he is doing much better.... he is moving around alot better and he has not went down anymore ... now we just have to get some weight on him ... thank you for all  your advice..
  • Hi,
I would view this as extremely serious & would have had *a good* vet there as soon as possible. What exactly did the vet say? Did they come out to see him, or only consult over the phone? How long have you had him? What do you feed him & how much, how often? How frequently does he see a farrier?

It could be, that if he's really malnourished, he just got too weak to stand. It could be that his feet were laminitic & hurting him too much to stand. Or it could be other issues, such as others have mentioned. If you would like to send some hoof pics(various angles), I could give you a critique on his feet.
