Horse Drooling?

Horse Drooling?
  • So, I was riding my horse today, And we were working on flying leadchanges, I noticed him being really relaxed. But he was like drooling ALOT! like a stream of water? I have been riding him in a regular  O ring snaffle, but i transition from the oring to the full cheek, and I rode him in the full cheek today, Its funny because after I used the bit on my qh, I went to ride my mustang, and she was salivating to? I have always heard that it is good for them to salivate, becuase they are relaxing and working the bit. While I was riding him, we were working on flying leadchanges for the first time and he was doing amazingly well. He was giving flexion on a loose rein, cantering small circles, so I dont know if something finally clicked in his brain, or if there is something, wrong... because my mustang was chomping away at the bit to. and kind of drooling. I was thinking maybe there was something on the bit.. So im going to wash them tomorrow and see if he behaves the same. I have NEVER seen him drool like he was..

    Any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks Much

  • If he has access to white clover that is probably causing his slobbers.  I have a lot of it in my pasture and both of mine slobber something terrable.  LOL Went to tie Shadow to the trailer two days ago to get him groomed up and he went to get a fly and drool just slung all over me!

Usually what I do is if I notice a behavior change, (can happen on clover) I start tossing some grass or alphalpha hay to them a couple times a day to give them something other than the clover to munch.  After a couple of days it seems to slow the slobbers down some so it isn't like turning on the water spiget!
  • Great question because I was wondering if they drool around dinner time when they see their food but can't get to it yet.  Bully tends to salivate heavily.
  • Yea the white clover thing is what I was thinking.. But he wasnt drooling until I started riding? I have just never seen him do it before lol. And then my mustang started doing it only when the bit was put in her mouth. So I wonder if maybe when i rode them last time they had some clover in there mouth and there was still traces of it on the bit? lol. Im just confused. Whatever it was, idk, But i hope he behaves as well as he was yesterday, we did our first successfull flying lead change yesterday and it was flawless!
