Chaste Berry?

Chaste Berry?
  • I'm bringing my new mare home on Thursday! When talking to her current owner about her diet, she mentioned that she gives the mare chaste berry everday with her supplements. She says the mare has painful cycles and this helps her to be less "mareish". I have done a little online research and read that it is used for this and for Cushing's. I was just wondering if anyone has any personal experience using this and what other possible affects it may have? Does anyone know if it is also used for calming? Thanks!
  • Did you continue this?  I am looking at chaste berry (vitex) for our very moody POA mare.

You can Google "chasteberry for mares" and get quite a few hits.

This is one of them.   http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/horsecare/1370/38793.html

I have been feeding chasteberry to mycoming 23 yo insulin resistant gelding and continue to have a lot of success controlling his I-R and his shedding with it.  Thankfully he is not cushings but he still has a bit of a shedding issue because the I-R has thrown his metabolism out of whack into the Outer Stratosphere.

I only know hear-say regarding using it for mares and also know that the company I buy the chastetree from (www.herbs4horses.com) uses chastetree in a blend that is specially made for moody mares.

If I had a mare that was moody, I would try it, but again, do your research because every horse is different':)'

    Hope this helps.
