Flax seed for dandruff......
  •   Salem had dandruffy skin and my vet recomended giving him flax. So I started with flax cookies and then starting putting whole flax seeds in his grain. Not much difference but I continue with it for all the other benefits it provides. Anyone else ever use it for skin issues with good results?
  • I've never used it.  Have you tried dandruff shampoo?  [':)']  The vet ruled out any fungus?  I really DO use dandruff shampoo sometimes and leave it on them for 20 minutes before rinsing...
  • Havent tried shampoo yet. No fungus or other skin issues...Do you have to use the shampoo every time you bathe?
  • I love the results of flax seed but you have to feed them the meal rather than the whole seeds.  The seeds are too tiny for them to really grind them up and they just pass through whole w/out any benefit.  My paint gelding tends to get dandruff, very dry skin, allergies, etc. and it does help some but doesn't get rid of it totally.  Buy generic Head and Shoulders and after you put it on, let it soak for 10 minutes, then rinse.  Goodluck ':)'
  • We give all our horses Flax Seed Meal. We started giving it to one of our horses due to hoof issues. Our vet recommended it. When we moved our horses to our own place, then all of them started getting it. We have one gelding that has had bad skin issues in the summer. So far he looks great this year and no sign of the issues. He coat also looks much better!

The most cost effective way I have found to buy it is in a 50lb bag from here:
    Flax Seed Meal

Keep in mind, you MUST keep it stored in a cool place. We have a big fridge in the barn, so we have room for it in there.
  •   I'm a firm believer in flax.  Give it one month.  Feed at least 4 oz (tuna fish can) twice a day.  It's easy to grind your own.  Fill a mill coffee grinder up with the whole seeds and that's about 4 oz.  If you grind as you use, the whole seeds won't go rancid and they're 1/2 to 1/4 the cost of ground flax products.
  •  Ive been giving it to him for around 4 months but whole and only about 1/4 cup twice daily. I may look into buying the meal already ground cause I know if you dont keep the grinder really clean you can get rancid bits from there and I dont even wanna risk it.Thank you all for the info! Oh,still wondering though, how often for the head and shoulders?
  • Flax is tha BOMB great for skin, hair & hoof treatment.. we give a 1/4 cup a day, ground in a coffee grinder.

  • Never tried flax, but do love BOSS (Black Oil Sunflower Seeds).  You might want to try it as an alternative.  Great for the coats.  No grinding - you can feed them straight.  Just make sure its the black oil and not the sunflowers with stripes.  You can get them in the bird food section.  Work up to 1 cup per horse per day.  Just scoop it out and feed it straight.  They love it and the seeds don't go bad easily like flax can.
