Question about a issue with my TB

• Zbyers Posted : 9/28/2011 6:24:41 PM Noticed when riding my TB that whenever he has a bit in his mouth he holds it open some the whole time. I have changed bits and tired different ones, checked my head stall, checked his mouth and cant find anything wrong. he is responding to commands with the bit perfectly just keeps holding his mouth open. Just chomps on the bit and holds his mouth open like he is smiling all the time. • danastark Posted : 10/1/2011 3:53:48 AM Have you had a vet or horse dentist check his teeth, tongue?  Also make sure the bridle isn't adjusted too small or that would pull and make him keep his mouth open and chew.  Could you take a picture? • DaneHaven Posted : 10/8/2011 12:53:57 PM Back when I had Beau, I read,was told or saw on tv that TB's have a lower pallet (roof of the mouth) than other horses? The suggestion was to use a double jointed bit. Beau seemed to like it better. Even if it doesn't cure your open mouth problem it will be more comfortable for your horse? I use it on Tonto too because his head and mouth were shaped similar to Beau's. Worth a try? Another thought may be a rubber bit. it also takes a couple days for them to adjust after their teeth are are floated. Was it a "power float"? • danastark Posted : 10/8/2011 3:31:34 PM That did remind me of a bitting clinic I went to, DH!  I was using a nice, fat d-ring snaffle w/ Cody, my draft and learned that drafts typically have fat tongues and I should use a thinner bit so it isn't poking him.   Warmbloods and I forget what else have fatter tongues too.  Good idea!  The french-link allows the bit to lay over their tongue and not "nut-cracker" so much and poke the roof of their mouth.  Also, are you sure the bit you are using is the right length across? • Luckintheshadows Posted : 10/19/2011 1:20:22 PM Zbyers - are you using any kind of nose band? if not, that could be worth a shot to try. Even just a plain cavesson for a little while.  Also, is your horse displaying any other signs of 'not normal' behaviour - like, not wanting to go forward, or resisting the contact, difficulty moving down slopes etc? It sounds like you've tried just about everything else, so it might be worth having your saddle checked?
