I really don't know "correct" HOWEVER I can tell you what I do know and it's only my limited experience.
Not all gaited horses naturally have a smooth gait. Some need to be worked with to achieve what we all want out of gaited horses.
I BELIEVE a gaited horse needs to have his head up higher in order to hollow the back some. My Standardbred will do a nice saddle gait but I have to put him into it and I normally raise his head up some and drive with my seat (plus more).
I guess you're looking to work him with a curcingle. If you look at TWH, Saddlebreds, and other gaited horses on youtube I think you'll find their heads are carried fairly high when they are gaiting.
